President's Letter

Last month we had a successful trip to the Centennial Observatory in Twin Falls, though we were clouded out at the Messier Marathon. This month promises to be even more exciting as warmer weather and clearer skies help us to shake off the winter doldrums.

We get started on Friday, 02 May with three (3!) different star parties. The first will take place at the Paramount Elementary School in Meridian. The second is up at the Cascade airport for students at their elementary school. The third will be at Bogus Basin for a group of environmental lawyers with connections to Tom Campbell at Capitol High School. If you own a telescope and are available that evening, I strongly encourage you to attend one of these events.

The next BAS Board meeting is Tuesday, 06 May at 7 p.m. in Classroom #2 at DCI. There will be an ISP organizing meeting preceding this at 6:30 p.m. If you are interested in helping out at ISP or with BAS in general, you are welcome to attend either or both of these.

The following Friday (09 May) will be our next membership meeting. It will be at the planetarium located at the College of Idaho in Caldwell. Note the change of location! It will begin at 7 p.m. with a brief business meeting followed by a presentation from Amy Truksa, the director of the facility. A map of the campus showing the location of the planetarium is available at the BAS1 yahoo group.

The following day, 10 May, is National Astronomy Day. We will be setting up at the Discovery Center by 10 a.m. for solar viewing as well as the Moon and (maybe) Venus. Come and join us and share our love for our hobby with the citizens of Boise.

Sunday 18 May is Zoo Daze at the Boise Zoo. We will once again be there to provide their patrons with view of the Sun. If you have a solar filtered telescope, please consider joining us once again on this day.

BAS star parties are scheduled for Saturday 03 May and 31 May. The location for both will be at Dedication Point unless otherwise stated on BAS1. Check the boiseastro.org website for information on when each star party gets going.

We are still seeking volunteers to assist at the observatory at Bruneau Dunes State Park this season. They are open for business and there are a number of perks associated with being a volunteer, including a free campsite if reserved in advance. For additional information, please contact one of the BAS board members.

A reminder on future dates: Saturday 28 June is the Bogus Basin star party and the weekend after Labor Day, 05-07 Sept is the Idaho Star Party. I hope to see our members come out to these two events in support of our programs.
